Many of you Iβm sure have noticed that the Naugatuck PD has had its bicycle unit out all summer after having not been in place for a short time. Officers of the bicycle unit have done a great job of patrolling the streets and alleys of Naugatuck over the past few months and have certainly made their mark on deterring crime in the Borough.

I would like to take a moment to recognize one of those officers, Officer Antonio Bastos who has been with the Naugatuck PD 3 Β½ years and is assigned to the overnight shift on the departmentβs bicycle unit. On most nights Officer Bastos is bicycling in the downtown beat checking on local businesses and properties. On September 6, 2014 Officer put his skills as a bicyclist to use to raise money for a good cause. Officer Bastos participated in 4th Annual Closer to Free Ride (www.rideclosertofree.org) which is a 100-mile bicycle race across Connecticut. The money raised helps support research and patient care at Smilow Cancer Hospital and Yale Cancer Center. Funds raised previously have benefitted programs and initiatives including: Advanced Cell Therapy, Survivor-ship, and Funding Lab Start Ups.
Officer Bastos is a great example of the men and women serving the Borough on its police force every day. Keep up the great work officer Bastos and with all of your hard work and dedication - Iβm sure you will have those training wheels off of you bike by next summer!!
