Naugatuck Pond Closed After Port-A-Potty Found in Water

Portable toilet found in Baummer's Pond being called an "act of vandalism." No fishing will be allowed for at least a week.

Baummer’s Pond in Naugatuck will be closed for at least a week after borough Public Works crews pulled a Port-A-Potty from the water over the weekend.

Public Works Superintendent Robert Roland said in an email that his staff removed the portable toilet, which they believe was thrown into the pond over the weekend.

Located near the intersection between Mill Street and Field Street, Baummer's pond is a nestled in a residential area and is popular for fishing, walking and other recreational activities.

Roland said the state Department of Environmental and Energy Protection has been notified about the incident. Due to the act of vandalism, he said the pond will be closed to fishing and the taking of any aquatic wildlife, or plant wildlife, until Monday, Nov. 14.

The  walking path remains open, however residents should proceed with caution in the parking lot area, Roland said.

Mayor Robert Mezzo said on his blog the Naugatuck Valley Health District has advised the borough to restrict fishing.
