Naugatuck YMCA Rec Director Leaves For Job In Stratford

STRATFORD, CT — Catherine Proto is joining the team at Sterling House Community Center as the new director of athletics and recreation, Sterling House announced in a news release.

Proto replaces Councilman Bill O'Brien, who has been involved with Sterling House for over 40 years.

For the past three years, Proto was the sports and recreation director at the Naugatuck YMCA, overseeing more than 15 youth sports and fitness programs including the legacy programs such as the Little Pal Basketball League, the Triano-Rossi Boxing Program and the Race4Chase triathlon training program.

Prior to the YMCA, Proto served as a basketball coach at the professional and collegiate levels. At the WNBA's Connecticut Sun she was an assistant coach (2013) and manager of scouting and video operations (2014-15).

Before joining the Sun, Proto was an assistant coach for the Seton Hall women's basketball program. She also worked with the WNBA's New York Liberty for seven years in the role of manager of scouting and video operations.

Proto graduated from Springfield College with a bachelor's degree in sports management and a master's degree in physical education.

Her leadership skills and extensive expertise in athletics will be a great asset to Sterling House, the news release said. She brings strong vision and innovative ideas for program growth for the community center.

"It is with great excitement that I join the Sterling House family," Proto said in the news release. "I believe my experience and passion for athletics and youth sports will fuel our service to Stratford. I look forward to many great things for Sterling House and our future commitment to our community."

Proto resides in Stratford with her family, including her twin boys, Ryan and Owen, who are 7 years old.
