News And Notes From Naugatuck Police Commission Meeting

Several items of interest were discussed at the recent meeting including the resolution of an issue between a homeowner and the borough.

Here is an update on several items from the most recent Naugatuck Board of Police Commissioners meeting:

Police Chief Steven Hunt presented his monthly report and notified the Commission of other
departmental updates. Chief Hunt notified the commission that the issue presented to the commission last month from a resident on Millville Avenue, has been resolved between the Borough and the homeowner. They have come to an agreement to trim back the bushes for a better site line to hopefully prevent further issues from happening in that area, as well as
creating a more safe intersection.

Chief Hunt notified the commission that Colin Leary was sworn into the department on
November 14, 2019 by Mayor Hess. Mr. Leary started the police academy in Meriden on November 15, 2019.

Chief Hunt updated the commission on the recruits currently in the academy. Three recruits are scheduled to graduate in March and one is scheduled to graduate in April.

Chief Hunt expressed that he was pleased with how well the Cookies with Rookies event that was held on November 16, 2019 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. inside the Bridge Street Big Y at the Big Y Bakery went. The Community responded well to the opportunity to meet and talk to the new members of the department. The new officers went above and beyond at the chance to meet and interact with members of the community.

The department in partnership with Big Y, Walmart, and the Police Union put together turkey dinner donations for ten local Naugatuck families to enjoy for the holiday.


Commissioner Allison read aloud a letter from Naugatuck Housing Authority thanking Chief Hunt and the department for their willingness to meet with the Oak Terrace residents and address their safety concerns was greatly appreciated.

Commissioner Smith read aloud a letter from Norwalk Police Department and Chief Kulhawik thanking Chief Hunt and the department, specifically Officer Jacob Pinho, for his successful investigation of numerous motor vehicle burglaries. Chief Kulhawik commended Officer Pinho on his attention to detail and his knowledge of motor vehicle and criminal law. Officer Pinho’s ability to think and act quickly in an unknown situation is a testament to the caliber of officer he is. Chief Kulhawik thanked Officer Pinho for being a vital partner in the resolution of these cases.

Deputy Mayor Laurie Taf Jackson thanked the department and the command staff for their attention to the Oak Terrace residents’ concerns. She has already seen repeat officers in the area to continue to grow a rapport with the residents in this area. Deputy Mayor was also greatly
impressed and happy with the successful Cookies with Rookies event. She said it was nice to see and hear the community speak highly about the event.
