“Loving husband, father and grandfather”

Waterbury, CT - Patrick Joseph (P.J.) Conway passed away peacefully Monday, May 4, 2020, at Beacon Brook Health Center. He was the loving husband of Lucille (Campoli) Conway with whom he celebrated his 55th wedding anniversary on May 1st of this year.

P.J. was born June 1, 1942, in Waterbury, a son of the late John and Margaret (Galvin) Conway. Prior to his retirement in 1998, P.J. worked as a sportswriter and editor for the Republican American Newspaper where he worked since 1961. He loved covering Major League Baseball but focused specifically on local Waterbury sports. He also enjoyed his part-time work at W.A.R.C. where he worked for several years. He was the host of his own sports radio show on WWCO. P.J. especially enjoyed working on his brother Tom’s political campaigns over the years. He looked forward to his Thursday morning coffee with his friends at Dunkin and also enjoyed special times with his close friends “The Fatta Cousie”. P.J. was a regular guest on Way Back Waterbury feature on Talk of the Town with his devoted friend Larry Rifkin for well over a decade where he loved reminiscing about Waterbury’s personalities, neighborhoods and of course sports. P.J. was a devoted fan of Rutgers basketball and was sure not to miss a game. He enjoyed listening to “The Fan” Radio and watching the Boston Red Sox. He will be greatly missed by his devoted family and all who were blessed to know him.

Besides his loving wife “Lu” he is survived by his children; Kellie (Conway) and her husband Jeffrey Pelletier of Waterbury, P.J. Jr. and his wife Laura of Prospect, Lenny and his wife Andrea of Waterbury and Mark and his wife Betsy Conway of Watertown. His grandchildren filled a special place in his heart. He leaves Patrick III, and Adam Conway, Colleen and Timothy Pelletier and Landon Conway all of whom were devoted to him. He also leaves his daughter-in-law Lori Conway of Watertown.

He was lucky to have such a supportive family throughout his life and illness. He also leaves behind two sister-in-laws and a brother-in-law Tony and Leonora Spino and Irene Conway as well as several nieces and nephews and a host of friends and extended family.

P.J. was predeceased by his two brothers John Conway and Thomas Conway, Sr.. and three sisters; Margaret “Peggy” Shugrue, Helen Butler, and Maureen Iava.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Beacon Brook, 89 Weid Dr., Naugatuck, CT 06770 for personal protective equipment for the staff whom he loved. P.J.’s family will be forever grateful for the love and care he received while he was a resident. The family would also like to thank relatives and friends who reached out to P.J. and those that sent him special videos.

May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face; the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His hand.

Arrangements: Due to COVID-19 pandemic limitations, a private calling hour will be held Thursday May 7, 2020 followed by graveside service at 11:00 AM at All Saints Cemetery. Those wishing to attend the graveside service may stay in their cars. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at a date and time to be announced. Chase Parkway Memorial/The Albini Family Funeral Home, 430 Chase Parkway, Waterbury has been entrusted with P.J.’s funeral arrangements.
