Report Of Gun In Backpack Prompted Lockdown At Naugatuck School: PD

Police said Naugatuck High School was locked down Wednesday after a student reported seeing a firearm in a backpack, but no gun was found.

NAUGATUCK, CT — Naugatuck High School was locked down for part of the day Wednesday after a student reported seeing a firearm in a backpack, however no gun was found, according to police.

In a news release, police said officers were called to the high school on Rubber Avenue around 2 p.m. to investigate the report, which resulted in the school being placed on lockdown.

After a thorough investigation, which included interviews and a sweep of the school using a specialized firearm detection canine, no gun was found, police said.

Officers then coordinated with school staff to dismiss students. No injuries or arrests were made as of Wednesday night, police said.

"As our community expects, incidents relating to weapons are responded to swiftly and with a significant deployment of police resources," police said in a news release. "We thank school staff, students and the community for their efforts [and] for seeing this incident to its conclusion."
