Several Catholic Churches To Merge, Close In Waterbury
The Archdiocese announced plans to merge or close several Waterbury churches due to falling attendance and a shortage of priests.
WATERBURY, CT β Some Waterbury Catholic churches will merge in the fall due to decreasing attendance and a priest shortage, WTNH News-8 reported.
Under a plan released by Archbishop Leonard Blair, Blessed Sacrament and Our Lady of Loreto will merge with the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception.
The St. Michael Parish will merge with the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception. St. Joseph Parish will merge with Our Lady of Mount Carmel. SS. Peter and Paul Church will no longer host regular Masses.

Blair said in a letter to parishioners that "fewer and fewer priests" and "a sharp decrease in attendance at some of the parishes in Waterbury" have resulted in the decision to close churches. The changes are anticipated to begin Sept. 30, NBC CT reported.
