NAUGATUCK, CT β€” A report of a shooting incident Sunday afternoon in Naugatuck was quickly found to be false and determined to be a "swatting call," according to police.

In a news release, police said they received a report of a shooting on Round Tree Drive around 2:15 p.m.

Officers responded to the area and found the incident was unfounded and what is commonly known as a "swatting call," police said.

According to police, swatting is "a dangerous and illegal practice" wherein a suspect falsely reports an emergency intended to deceive law enforcement and trigger an armed response to a particular address.

"The Naugatuck Police Department condemns such actions," police said in a news release, "as they not only put innocent lives at risk but also divert crucial resources away from genuine emergencies."

Police said they are actively investigating this swatting incident and "those responsible will be held accountable for their actions."
