Review by Nancy Sasso Janis
Landmark Community Theatre welcomes audiences to the newly restored Thomaston Opera House with an inclusive production of the late Jonathan Larson’s rock musical “Rent.” Larson wrote the book, music and lyrics for the show, with musical arrangements by Steve Skinner and an original concept/additional lyrics by Billy Aronson and music supervision and additional arrangements by Tim Weil.
Amy Taylor makes her directorial debut with this Landmark production and brings a clear vision to the costumes that she designed and the blocking of many of the scenes. The two levels of the stage are used well, “La Vie Boheme” is set at small round tables and the ensemble makes some entrances through the aisles. The staging of “Seasons of Love” is definitely unique, as is the placement of the singers for “What You Own.” Some of the modifications may have been made because of limitations backstage but it all works well visually.
