2 New Canaan Police Officers Receive Promotions

NEW CANAAN, CT — Two longtime members of the New Canaan Police Department, Officer George Caponera and Sgt. Aaron LaTourette, recently received promotions.

According to a news release provided by police, Caponera was promoted to the role of sergeant and LaTourette was promoted to lieutenant. They are both assigned to the department's Patrol Division.

LaTourette has served with the department since November 2000, during which has filled the roles of sergeant, patrol officer, field training officer, dispatcher, firearms instructor, police patrol rifle instructor, special response team executive officer and team leader. He is a certified motorcycle officer and a member of the Honor Guard.

LaTourette is a member of the United States Marine Corp and was deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom from 2004 to 2005 in Iraq. He is currently a Chief Warrant Officer 4 in the United States Marine Corp Reserves, according to police.

LaTourette has earned several awards throughout his career, including the Commissioners Physical Fitness Award, the Commissioners Firearms Award, The Perkin Award, MADDD awards, multiple Medical Service awards and Unit Citation awards. He was also the recipient of the Stephen W. Wood Officer the Year Award in 2014, police said.

Caponera has served with the department since 2010, during which he has filled the roles of patrol officer, dispatcher, field training officer and coordinator and school liaison officer. He holds a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Delaware, according to police.

Caponera was awarded the 2015 Stephen W. Wood Officer of the Year Award, a Traffic Hero Safety Award, two Mother’s Against Drunk Driving Awards, three Physical Fitness Awards and a Life Saving award, police said.

LaTourette was promoted during a special meeting of the town's Police Commission on July 19, effective Aug. 1.

Caponera was promoted during a special meeting of the town's Police Commission on June 22, effective Sept. 1.
