Car Stolen, Vehicles Entered in New Canaan: Police

Police said the stolen car was parked in the owner's driveway and had been left unlocked with the keys inside.

NEW CANAAN, CT — Police said a car was reported stolen from a driveway in town Sunday, and other vehicles parked in New Canaan were entered as well.

In a news release, Chief of Police Leon Krolikowski said a 2016 GMC Yukon XL parked in the owner's driveway on Butler Lane was reported stolen around 10 a.m. The owner told officers the car was unlocked with the keys inside when it was stolen, Krolikowski said.

According to Krolikowski, police believe suspects seen entering vehicles on Orchard Drive early Sunday morning were spotted driving the stolen Yukon, which had not been found as of Tuesday morning.

Earlier that day, police received a report of suspects attempting to enter vehicles on Orchard Drive around 5:15 a.m. As officers were responding, a second Orchard Drive resident reported a person was trying to enter a vehicle parked in their driveway, Krolikowski said.

Though both vehicles were unlocked, nothing of value was left inside them and, as a result, no items were reported missing, Krolikowski said. A witness described the suspects' two vehicles but officers were unable to locate them.

Later the day, officers searched the Butler Lane neighborhood for the stolen Yukon and met with two homeowners who noticed their unlocked vehicles has been entered and rummaged through as well, however nothing was taken from them, Krolikowski said.

Police urge residents to always lock their vehicles and take keys with them, to secure valuables and never leave valuables in a vehicle. According to Krolikowski, identity theft often occurs when driver's licenses and credit cards are stolen.
