Dangerous Weapon Found After Motor Vehicle Stop: New Canaan PD

The suspect was pulled over for speeding on Sunday evening.

NEW CANAAN, CT — A 32-year-old White Plains, NY man was arrested on a weapons charge Sunday after police found a long knife in his vehicle after a traffic stop, according to authorities.

Arrested on a charge of illegal possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle was Jeffrey R. Mackey after he was pulled over on Old Stamford Road just after 7 p.m. He had been observed traveling at about 45 miles per hour in a 30 mph zone, according to police.

"A [motor vehicle stop] was conducted and upon approaching the vehicle and speaking with Mackey (the operator), the officer observed in plain view on the front passenger floor a large black knife in a sheath with the serrated portion of the blade exposed," wrote New Canaan police in a statement. "The blade length measured approximately 10 inches in length, any blade length 4 or more inches is considered a weapon in a [motor vehicle]."

Mackey was taken into custody but released after posting a $5,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in Norwalk Superior Court on February 7.
