NEW CANAAN, CT — The 108-year-old brick barn at New Canaan's Mead Park will be demolished in the near future, following a decision Tuesday by the Board of Selectmen, writes News 12 Connecticut.

Efforts to save the dilapidated barn ultimately came up short due to a lack of funds to renovate it. The estimated cost to repair the structure is about a half a million dollars.

Tuesday's vote fell along party lines, with First Selectman Kevin Moynihan and Selectman Nick Williams, both Republicans, in favor of the move, while Democrat Kit Devereaux opposed it, reports the New Canaan Advertiser.

The barn's fate has hung in the balance for the last two years, with Moynihan and other town officials in favor of tearing it down because it had become an eyesore and lacked a future purpose if it was restored. The New Canaan Preservation Alliance had hoped to save it because it is part of the town's history.
