Digital Natives Author Speaks at St. Luke's School

Devorah Heitner, PhD talks about raising children in a digitally connected world

Raising “digital natives” is about embracing the positive side of technology while navigating the many challenges. This was a salient point Devorah Heitner, PhD demonstrated with educators, parents and students at St. Luke’s last week.

“Teens may be tech-savvy” Heitner said, “but they don’t always have the wisdom.”

Heitner met with teachers and parents, offering research on children and technology, and advice about setting reasonable boundaries for school and family life.

The sixth graders also spent time with Heitner. Through some interactive exercises, students explored the potential impact—positive and negative—of sharing personal information through social media.

“Because we live in a digital age, it’s so much harder to get away from it all.” Heitner continued, “We need to help children—and ourselves—learn to manage these distractions so we can live in a thoughtfully-connected world”.
