New Canaan Youth Field Hockey Registration 5-8th Grade Girls

Registration for the New Canaan Youth Field Hockey program (5th-8th grade girls) for fall 2012 has started on line at www.fcfha.com.

The field hockey program runs for 10 weeks in the fall, first week of school until the first week of November, culminating in a season end jamboree with neighboring towns.   Our mission statement is to teach the fundamentals of the game of field hockey but also to promote sportsmanship, confidence and respect for coaches, teammates and opponents in young athletes.  The NCYFH program accepts all players wishing to participate in New Canaan as well as in surrounding areas whose town does not offer a field hockey league of its own.

NCYFH has three different groups of players- that welcome players who are brand new to the game and those with some experience to those with several years’ experience:

Practice will be two days a week from 5:30 to 7pm on Tuesday and Thursdays with games on Saturdays and an occasional Sunday.  Games are with other town teams in Fairfield county.

8th Grade,
travel league that meets 3 days a week.  Depending on the number of registrants we plan on having two 8th grade travel teams. Players will be evaluated and placed on a team based on skill and experience. These two teams, as they ready for the high school programs, make a commitment to practice three days a week, and that field hockey be their primary sport for the season. Practice will be three days a week from 5:30 to 7pm, Monday, Wednesday and Fridays, with games on Saturdays and an occasional Sunday.  Games are with other town teams in Fairfield county.

New Canaan is one of many towns that are a part of The Fairfield County Field Hockey Association.  FCFHA was created in 2004 with the intent to promote the sport of field hockey to youth girls in a fun, and safe environment where they can learn the basic essentials of the sport- learn to grow in the sport and competing in the older grades. The association is for towns that reside in Fairfield County. The towns involved created a governing board which includes a representative from each town. This gives all towns that are involved, an equal say in implementing the program.

Our organization is run by a dedicated groups volunteers, (directors, team managers, safety parents, spirit wear coordinator.)  Becoming a volunteer, whether it is with a single afternoon commitment or a larger role such as a team manager or a board position is a great way to watch your daughter develop in the sport, meet her friends and parents.

Our goal is simple, and, at the end of the season we will know we achieved it if the answer to this statement is YES:  “The girls had a fun time, learned new skills, made new friends, have a new awareness of their skills and developed a sense of teamship- such that they want to return next year and play again!”

During the first week of school there will be a parent meeting for those who have registered- both new families to the NCYFH are asked to be present- our program has grown and updates are needed.  At that meeting uniforms will be distributed.
