Fire Log: Steam, Accident Prompt Calls

It was a relatively quiet week for the Fire Department.

Vehicles Heavily Damaged, No One Injured by YMCA:

Two vehicles collided on South Avenue by the YMCA Monday, Dec. 14, at 2:58 p.m., as students were being released from Saxe Middle School. Despite how the vehicles looked and airbag deployment, no one was injured in the accident. Firefighters helped with the clean-up.

No Smoke, No Fire, Just a Lot of Steam:

A neighbor called just before 7 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 13, to report a fire in the garage of the house next door on Ponus Ridge Road near Winfield Lane. The homeowner then called from a cell phone confirming the flames. Tankers were called in from Noroton Heights and Pound Ridge, but were cancelled en route when New Canaan firefighters arrived to find no smoke and no fire. A burst of steam from a broken water pipe had caused the alarm.

Odor Investigation, Closed Flue, Public Assistance:

Firefighters responded to a call for help from a resident on Gerrish Lane Saturday, Dec. 12, just after 4 p.m.

A resident on Old Stamford Road called the Fire Department just before 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 13, when smoke from the chimney began filling his house. The caller said he had opened the windows, and suspected the flue had been left closed when a fire was started in the fireplace.

A crew investigated an electrical smell on Smith Ridge Road north of Michigan Road shortly before 4 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 16.

False Alarms—5:

Five calls received by the Fire Department this week were later labeled as false alarms including one at Chase Bank, 122 Main Street, Monday night at 10 p.m. Steam and painters set off alarms accidentally at several houses.
