INTEGRATIVE MEDICINE: Acupuncture, Massage, Reiki and Reflexology

Norwalk Hospital's Integrative Medicine Staff will present a panel discussion and workshop covering massage, acupuncture, Reiki and Reflexology on Thursday, February 6, at 10:00 AM in the Lamb Room.

In this third lecture of the Wellness, Mind and Body series at the Library, the panel will discuss holistic therapies, and how these scientifically-based disciplines do not replace traditional medical care and practices, but rather serve to complement them in promoting the healing process. Integrative medicine is healing-oriented. It honors the whole person: body, mind and spirit. It acknowledges a person's lifestyle as well as their environment as playing a role in health and healing.

Dee Hiatt, the panel’s expert on massage, is the author of At Ease (a massage therapy newsletter). Medical massage is a gentle type that offers a way to relax, relieve pain, calm the nervous system and improve physical function. Her primary specialties include myofascial release and medical massage.

Acupuncture promotes healthy recovery from surgery, relief from pain, nausea and discomfort, and provides balance and equilibrium between mind and body.  Small needles are placed into the body for a therapeutic effect.  Panel memberJody Eisemann, has more than 20 years of experience.

The entire body is mirrored on the feet in Reflexology.  When pressure is applied to specific reflex points, the result is stress reduction and the feeling of well-being. Reflexology therapist Athena Coroneos’s adjunct studies include Reiki, and massage.

Reiki therapy is an ancient art of hands-on healing that eases discomfort, restores balance and sustains health.  A decrease in fatigue, nausea, pain and anxiety can be felt as a result of Reiki treatment.  Anne Geary  is a Reiki Master and also an Integrated Energy Therapist.
