Malloy: We'll Sue if Trump Blocks Funding to Sanctuary Cities
The Connecticut governor joined other officials from across the country in vowing to fight Trump's proposal.

Gov. Dannel Malloy said he would sue President-elect Donald Trump’s administration if he were to block federal funding to so-called sanctuary cities like New Haven.
Malloy said blocking federal funding would violate the law, according to WTNH.
Sanctuary cities are generally defined as a city that limits assisting federal immigration officials through laws or policies. There is no official classification.

Trump pledged to block funding to sanctuary cities within his first 100 days. His home base of New York City could lose $10.4 billion under that policy, according to CNN. The city doesn’t turn over undocumented immigrants for minor violations, but does so for felony offenses including assault and murder.
New Haven and Hartford are often called sanctuary cities because their police departments don’t ask people about immigration status and don’t detain people for federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement, according to WNPR.

Malloy said that Connecticut will honor its commitment and if the federal government wants to take action it can, but shouldn’t depend on Connecticut for assistance.
Other officials including New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio have made similar commitments to push back against Trump’s proposed policy.
