New Canaan 16-Year-Old Cited For Underage Drinking Party: Cops

The incident occurred Monday night, July 17, on Oenoke Ridge Road near West Road.

NEW CANAAN, CT — A 16-year-old New Canaan teen was issued juvenile summons Monday night for hosting an underage drinking party on Oenoke Ridge Road near West Road, according to police.

Because of his age, the identity of the youth was not disclosed, but he was cited for the following violations:

  • Delivery of alcohol to a minor
  • Allowing minors to possess alcohol
  • Failure to halt alcohol possession by a minor

Police were called to the area just after 9 p.m. on a report of the underage party at a residence, and upon arrival officers found 20-30 teens on the back patio.

"A majority of the juveniles were observed holding Bud Light and Coors Light cans in their hands," wrote New Canaan police in a statement. "Upon observing the police officers the juveniles ran in different directions away from the police officers."

Inside the home, officers found more than two dozen empty beer cans and Bud Light and Coors Light boxes.

The cited teen told police that he supplied some of the beer, but did not know where the rest came from. He also told the officers that "it was only intended to be a gathering of a few friends, but that other juveniles began showing up uninvited."

Monday's case is the latest in what has been a rash of underage drinking cases being investigated over the past several months, not only in New Canaan but in other communities around Fairfield County.

"The other juveniles present at the party that could be charged with possession of alcohol by a minor will be invited to participate in our department's Diversionary Program," wrote New Canaan police. "The New Canaan Police will continue to investigate and when Probable Cause exists make arrests in cases involving underage drinking/parties."
