New Canaan 6G 44, Trumbull 23

New Canaan 6th Grade Girls Basketball team ends the regular season with a win over Trumbull

The New Canaan 6th grade girls basketball team beat Trumbull in a non-league game at Saxe Middle School on Sunday by a score of 44-23. Every girl on the team contributed with at least two points. Leading scorers were Elizabeth St. George (11 points), Marlee Smith (10) and Olivia West (8.)

New Canaan fell behind 6-0 in the first quarter due to relentless Trumbull defensive pressure and it appeared that the team was going to have a long day, but they quickly took control of the tempo for the rest of the game. Elizabeth St. George got them on the board by converting a foul shot, followed by a Tyler Towers inside shot off a feed by Marlee Smith. Smith and St. George followed with layups, and 2 Julia Bazata free throws brought the girls to an 9-6 lead. The girls outscored Trumbull 14-7 in the second quarter, with baskets by Olivia West, Chloe Reidy, Smith and St. George, and they entered half time with a 23-14 lead.

Scoring started slowly in the second half but a defensive steal by Smith led to a jumper by Quinn McKiernan. After keeping Trumbull from converting on their possession, St. George scored a layup off a strong inbound pass by McKiernan. Scoring was rounded out by baskets from Emma Gibbens, Cameron Murphy, Smith, St. George, Towers and West.

New Canaan finishes the season with a 10-3 record in league play, and enters next weekend’s Fairfield County Basketball Association playoffs at the third seed.
