New Canaan Baseball Drops State Final

New Canaan's rags-to-riches story ends in defeat in title game.

The New Canaan Rams baseball team, playing in its first state championship game since 1972, lost to Fitch High School 6-4 on Saturday afternoon in Middletown. Fitch scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to beat the Rams and capture the Class L state championship.

The Rams came ready to play, erupting for three runs in the top of the first inning. Willie Burger provided the big  blow with a two-run triple that helped New Canaan jump out to a 3-0 advantage.

Fitch scratched and clawed there way back to tie up the score at 3-3. The Rams, who entered the tournament as the number 24 seed, pushed across a run in the top of the sixth inning on a single by Nick Cascione that plated Dan Rajkowski to make it 4-3 New Canaan.

New Canaan was just six outs away from the state championship, but couldn't close it out. Fitch scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, all of them coming with two men out, taking a 6-4 lead.

Fitch sent New Canaan down in order in the top of the seventh inning to win the game 6-4 to capture the state championship.
