
The New Canaan High School crew team scooped up multiple medals at two regattas during the weekend of April 17-19.
New Canaan commanded quite a presence at the Mercer Sprints in Princeton, N.J., claiming nine gold medals, four silver and three bronze medals out of 16 events.
“It’s been a long winter, but the kids have worked tirelessly throughout to be prepared for our spring events,” New Canaan varsity Coach Yan Vengerovskiy of Maritime Rowing Club in Norwalk said. “I feel confident that we are on the right track for our future regattas.”

Gold medal recipients included Elektra Smicka, Skylar Severance, Meg Adams, and Katherine Mettler in the Women’s Novice 4X; Luca Furst and Phillip MacNeal in the Men’s Varsity LTWT 2X; Meg Adams, Hannah Gelnaw, Margaret Seeman and Kimmie Dyrvik in the Women’s Varsity LTWT 4X; Claire Campbell, Caroline Murphy, Gabby Kulesz and Maggie Owen in the Women’s Varsity 4X; Siobaugh Naughton, Tate Aronstein, Riley Mushkin and Lauren Bell in the Women’s 2nd Varsity 4X; David Orner, Colt Dewol, Paul Gelhaus, and Phillip Bogdanov in the Men’s Varsity 4X; Aidan Bridwell, Andrew Langalis, Dan Cone, and John Norton in the Men’s 2nd Varsity 4X; Maggie Owen and Siobaughn Naughton in the Women’s 2nd Varsity 2X; and Cole Dorsey and Liam Galloway in the Men’s 2nd Varsity 2X.
Silver medal recipients included Ethan Geller, Tanner Polo. Brandon Golino, Jack Reed, Robert Sillo, Karl Catone, Josh Klapper, Phillip MacNeal and Luca Furst in the Mens’ Varsity Lightweight 8+; John Byrne, Riley Marsh, David Dayya, and Liam Galloway in the Men’s 2nd Varsity Varsity 4X; Caroline Murphy, and Gabrielle Kulesz in the Women’s Varsity 2X; and Claire Campbell in the Women’s Varsity 1X.

Bronze medal recipients included Luca Furst, Tanner Polo, Ethan Geller, Phillip MacNeal, and Claire Hall-Tipping in the Men’s Varsity Lightweight 4+; David Orner and Colt Dewolf in the Men’s Varsity 2X; and Brandon Golino, Jack Reed, Tanner Polo, and Ethan Geller in the Men’s Lightweight Varsity 4X.
It was the first warm day of spring and New Canaan Crew shined throughout the Row for Autism in Port Washington, New York. Once again, New Canaan racked up the gold with four first-place finishes, while also taking home a siliver medal.
Gold medal recipients were Andrew Orner, Tim Cone, Ethan Marsh, and Andreas Moor in the Men’s Novice 4X; Casey Martin, Rachel Smith, Sarah Bazata, and Maddy Colpeper in the Women’s Novice 4X; Caroline Challe, Patrick Curley, Grant Hanauer, Dmitri Nuzhny, Reese Gregory, Cary O’Brien, Ryan Sill, James Hilton, and Kevin Fanning in the Men’s Freshman 8+A; and Anika Chatterjee, Tighe Ekern, Robert Carpenter, Jasper Tucker, Tyler Brennan, Drew Pohle, John Frey, Tommy Deegan, and Thomas Mudd in the Men’s Freshman 8+B.
Taking the silver medal were William Grotto, Harrison Mount, Michael Dayya, and Alexander Williams in the Men’s Novice 4X.
