
The New Canaan Crew team kicked off its fall slate with admirable showings at multiple regattas in the surrounding area.
New Canaan junior Claire Campbell continues to rack up the medals with a third place finish in the prestigious Head of the Charles regatta in Boston. The largest 2-day regatta in the world, the regatta has over 11,000 athletes rowing in over 1,900 boats in 61 events. It attracts roughly 300,000 spectators during regatta weekend. The competitive field includes individual and team competitors from colleges, high schools, and clubs from nearly all American states and various countries.
The week yielded yet another medal for Campbell who won the silver medal in the U17 Singles event at the third annual Head of the Quinobequin race --- a three-kilometer youth sculling race for single rowers that also takes place on the Charles River. Over 119 rowers competed. Campbell holds the course record in this event. Teammate Maggie Owen snagged the bronze medal.

New Canaan Crew’s David Orner claimed first place and David Dayya claimed third in the Men’s U19 1X race. The team continued to dominate with John Norton winning the silver, Dan Cone taking the bronze medal in the Men’s U17 Singles Event.
Indian Wells State Park in Shelton was the site of the annual Head of the Housatonic regatta. Campbell placed second in the Women’s Junior Single event. Paul Gelhaus, Aidan Bridwell, Dan Cone and David Dayya captured first place in the Men’s Junior 4X event while Liam Galloway, John Byrne, Cole Dorsey and Phillip Bogdanov walked away with second place. The Junior Women’s quad team racked up a second place finish as well, comprised of Gaby Kulesz, Maggie Owen, Tate Aronstein and Caroline Murphy.

About New Canaan High School Crew: New Canaan crew was organized in 1997. The program is run under the guidance of Maritime Rowing Club in Norwalk and has expanded from thirteen rowers to over 110 from 14 schools and 16 towns including New Canaan High School, Darien High School, King School in Stamford, Joel Barlow School in Redding and several other schools in the area and as far away as New Haven. Rowers from the program compete regionally, nationally and internationally on the U.S. Junior National Team and have been medal winners on at all levels. The team has garnered multiple national championships over the last four years as well as countless regional and state championships.
About Maritime Rowing Club: Maritime Rowing Club is home to the New Canaan High School crew team. The organization is dedicated to competitive and recreational rowing for all ages and abilities. Based on the scenic Norwalk River, rowing both sweep and sculling shells, Maritime is a team-oriented rowing club where all members work together to provide an enjoyable rowing experience for all. Since 1996, Maritime Rowing Club has offered rowing classes for all ages and skill levels from Middle School to Learn-to-Row to Masters competitive racing.
