NEW CANAAN, CT — First Selectman Dionna Carlson announced on Monday that the state of Connecticut Department of Housing approved New Canaan's application for a Moratorium of Applicability of state statute 8-30g. This means that housing developers may not bypass local zoning regulations for a four-year period.
The statute, which has been in place since 1989, requires all municipalities in Connecticut to have 10 percent of housing designated as affordable. Developers can come into towns that aren't in compliance and circumvent local zoning regulations to build developments.

New Canaan earned the moratorium through the construction of affordable housing units in town over the years, the town said in an announcement, pointing to the Millport and Canaan Parish apartments. New Canaan sent its moratorium application to the state in May.
"I would like to take this opportunity to thank you and the town of New Canaan for continuing to address the affordable housing needs in your community," said Department of Housing Commissioner Selia Mosquera-Bruno in an approval letter to Carlson.

Carlson said in an announcement the town has "worked tirelessly in partnership with the New Canaan Housing Authority to provide affordable housing solutions for our community."
"We will continue to identify strategic opportunities to add to our affordable housing stock in an effort to earn future moratoriums and maintain control of local development," she added.
