In a surprise, 26th Senatorial District incumbent Republican and Independent Party candidate Toni Boucher lost to Democrat Will Haskell, writes the CT Mirror. The district holds New Canaan, Wilton, Westport and other nearby communities.

Also in another upset, in the 142th House District Lucy Dathan, Democratic (and Working Families Party) candidate defeated Republican incumbent Fred Wilms, writes the New Canaan Advertiser. Wilms also appeared on the Independent Party line.

Additionally, in the 125th House District incumbent Tom O'Dea, Republican, won re-election over Democratic challenger Ross Tartell, according to the Advertiser.

Registered Republicans outnumber Democrats in New Canaan by a better than two-to-one margin, but Haskell, who grew up in Westport but now lives in New Canaan, told Patch that he was feeling optimistic. Haskell stopped by to speak to Patch just after he cast his ballot at Saxe Middle School.

"I think history will be made today," Haskell predicted, adding that fighting gun violence was the top concern of voters among the 4,000 homes he visited during his campaign.

New Canaan resident Phil Hardin, who also voted at Saxe Middle School, told Patch that while he always votes whether it's a midterm or presidential election, this year's race for governor was particularly important to him.

"I voted for Stefanowski and the Republican ticket," Hardin said, adding that he wants to see more fiscal responsibility in Hartford. "Too many companies are leaving the state, the economy is in decline and taxes are too high."

According to Robert Mantilia, moderator at the Saxe Middle School polling site, turnout has been strong throughout the day, despite the rain. Overall, New Canaan has nearly 14,000 registered voters, nearly half of whom are Republicans.

"It's been consistent all day," Mantilia told Patch. "We prepared for a heavy turnout, as if it were a presidential election, and all indications are that we're at that level."

Locally in New Canaan, the decision in the 36th Senatorial District was not settled until Wednesday morning, with Democrat Alexandra "Alex" Bergstein defeating incumbent Republican L. Scott Frantz.

For Judge of Probate, Republican incumbent William P. Osterndorf is running unopposed.

For Registrar of Voters, Joan McLaughlin, Republican, is opposed by Democrat John Amarilios. Both are incumbents.
