The New Canaan Fire Marshal's Office has provided a list of helpful reminders for residents regarding smoke detectors in homes.
NEW CANAAN, CT — The New Canaan Fire Marshal's Office has provided a list of helpful reminders for residents regarding smoke detectors in homes.
In a recent Facebook post, fire official urged New Canaan residents to take a moment to replace the batteries in their smoke detectors after setting their clocks ahead an hour over the weekend for daylight saving time.
According to the fire marshal's office, this initiative is part of the nationwide "Change Your Clocks, Change Your Batteries" reminder.

"Taking this simple step helps ensure your detectors are working properly to keep your household safe," the post reads, "and can help prevent that late night low battery chirp we all hear at the worst possible time."
The fire marshal's office also provided the following list of helpful reminders for residents:

- Check and replace batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
- If you have a home alarm or security system, schedule annual servicing to ensure it operates properly.
- Systems with integrated smoke detectors also require yearly maintenance.
Residents who are unable to change their own batteries may call fire headquarters at 203-594-3140 to arrange for firefighters to come to their residence for assistance, according to the post.
Residents who have a security system with integrated smoke detector are reminded that these systems require annual maintenance as well, according to the post.
