New Canaan Girls U9 Red Soccer Team blaze past Trumbull 7-4

This past Sunday, once again, the Girls U9 Red were on fire. They turned up the heat on Trumbull, and tallied their third win of the season.

Lexie Tully put New Canaan on the scoreboard early when she stormed down the left side and placed a hard strike into the corner. Tully continued the momentum when she intercepted a goal kick and blasted another shot passed the goalie to put the Red up 2-0.

Ava Pertusiello continued the assault after she too intercepted a goal kick, charged down the middle, and fired the ball into the corner of the net. Pertusiello quickly struck again this time weaving past the Trumbull defense and delivering a high shot that sailed over the goalie’s head.

On defense Maggie Murphy and Isabel Cavanagh consistently repelled Trumbull’s attacks, while Alexandra Gelvin worked tirelessly in the midfield to create offensive opportunities. She succeeded on a pass to Kathryn Norton who fired a line drive to the corner of the goal. Kayleigh See did a fantastic job protecting the goal, and held Trumbull scoreless for the entire half.

Up 5-0 to begin the second half, New Canaan was instructed to concentrate on ball control, however Trumbull was determined to make comeback. They managed to capitalize soon into the second half and tallied three consecutive goals to bring the score to 5-3.

New Canaan went back to offense and immediately took back control of the game with an effort led by midfielders Fiona Mueller, Katie Quill, and Tema Wagner. Lila Volpe, coming off an injury, led multiple charges down the field that put Trumbull on their heels.

The Red finally answered when Kelly Polacek broke away down the right side and launched a high shot into the net. Polacek notched another goal off a rebound from a New Canaan corner kick. Trumbull was able to net one more just before the final whistle for a final score of 7-4.
