New Canaan Just Got A Little Cooler [Video]
Swirl, a self-serve frozen yogurt shop, is now open.
Swirl, a self-serve frozen yogurt shop, opened just before Memorial Day, and it didn’t take long for the town’s sweet teeth to find their way to its doors at 111 Cherry St.
The concept is deliciously simple: customers choose from a rotating daily selection of eight different flavors of frozen yogurt, then head to a toppings bar filled with fruits and crumbled candies and cookies. Customers make a last stop for nuts and cereal (displayed in sealed cylinders to protect those with nut allergies), then head to checkout, where the concoction is weighed for pricing. Swirl charges 59-cents an ounce per serving.
Owners Julie and Sonny Yi, said the self-serve model has been popular on the West Coast for a few years. The Los Angeles-based Pinkberry chain, which has a shop in Fairfield, recently announced they’ll be opening a franchise in Greenwich this fall.

The Yis said New Canaan was the kind of “attractive New England town” they were looking for to open their first shop. The Norwalk couple had been running a family-owned dry cleaning business for 10 years, and wanted to start something of their own.
“We have two young kids and wanted to do something different,” Julie Yi told Patch. “We were looking around and fell in love with New Canaan.”

Sonny Yi said the warm weather arrived just after they opened their doors on May 25, and the reception they have received from New Canaan residents has been equally warm and welcoming.
Swirl is open Sunday-Thursday from 11 a.m. – 9 p.m. and on Fridays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. – 10 p.m.
