New Canaan Man Flees After Crashing Jeep Into Pole: Police

The suspect was later apprehended at his home.

NEW CANAAN, CT — A 36-year-old New Canaan man smashed his Jeep Wrangler into a pole on Forest Street on Dec. 2, fled the scene and was arrested later at his Smith Ridge Road home, according to New Canaan police.

Michael F. Holland smashed the vehicle at about 2:40 p.m. after the driving up on a sidewalk, a move seen by "multiple witnesses."

"The operator, later identified as Holland, was observed exiting his vehicle, looking at the damage to his vehicle and pole and then leaving the scene of the crash," wrote New Canaan police in a statement. "Witnesses provided photos to responding officers of Holland driving from the scene of the crash as well as the registration plate of the vehicle."

Officers collected evidence from the crash site and then went to Holland's home and matched it to the damaged Jeep in the driveway.

"Upon arriving at his residence and speaking with Holland he appeared intoxicated and was not compliant with officers when requested to stand up from the couch and walk outside," wrote police. "Ultimately, Holland resisted being handcuffed and continued to pull his arms away from officers as they attempted to handcuff him."

Holland was charged with:

  • Disorderly conduct
  • Interfering with an officer/resisting
  • Evading responsibility
  • Failure to drive right

He was released after posting a $5,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Norwalk Superior Court on Dec. 14.
