New Canaan Officials Take Part In Emergency Preparedness Exercises

NEW CANAAN, CT — On Oct. 18, New Canaan Emergency Management and the New Canaan Library hosted emergency management directors, municipal CEOs and senior leadership teams from across the region, as well as state representatives, to conduct exercises as part of the 2023 Governor's Emergency Preparedness and Planning Initiative.

According to a news release provided by the town, this "table-top" exercises focused on each municipality's response to a hazardous materials release in their community and subsequent considerations including emergency response, family assistance, sheltering and mass notification.

New Canaan's participants included First Selectman Kevin Moynihan, Emergency Management Director Russ Kimes, Police Chief John DiFederico, Police Deputy Chief Andrew Walsh, Public Works Director Tiger Mann, Administrative Officer Tucker Murphy and Fire Captain Robert Petrone, as well first selectmen candidates Dionna Carlson and Amy Murphy Carrol and selectman candidate Stephen Karl.

"Conducting this exercise with neighboring municipal Emergency Management personnel allowed us to share experience, capabilities and knowledge that will prove to be an invaluable asset when we respond as a region to emergencies," Kimes said in a news release. "The Connecticut Division of Emergency Management and Homeland Security Region 1 Emergency Planning Team, along with New Canaan Emergency Management, extend their gratitude to Cheryl Capitani and the entire New Canaan Library team for hosting this critically important public safety event."
