NEW CANAAN, CT — New Canaan police recently announced the retirement of two longtime employees.
In a Facebook post, police said both Animal Control Officer Allyson Halm and Property and Evidence Manager Jean Cross officially retired from their positions on July 28.
Halm, who was hired in May 2015, told Patch in April she planned to retire this year due to the physical nature of her job.

"At this stage in my life," Halm said in April, "the physical aspect is not working."
Despite this, Halm said she loved her job and believes she was very good at it. She has also enjoyed working with the New Canaan Police Department and employees at Town Hall, all of whom have been very supportive to her over the past eight years.

"It's a pleasure to be employed with the town," Halm said. "The residents have been very enjoyable and understandable, willing to listen and to learn, especially about coexisting with wildlife which is one of my passions. I hope that I leave some sort of an impact regarding that educational aspect."
Police noted Halm was "respected and adored by both the two and four-legged residents" of New Canaan.
"Her commitment to the wellbeing of animals and wildlife in our town is commendable," police said on Facebook. "The knowledge and experience she brought to our department is very much appreciated by our officers."
Cross was hired by New Canaan police in January 1997. Hardworking and dedicated throughout her 26 years with the department, police noted she fingerprinted countless individuals throughout her career with a smile and friendly demeanor.
"She brought 100 percent effort to work every single day for over 25 years," police said. "Her responsible nature and dedication to the New Canaan Police Department served our department well...we thank you, Jean, for everything [you] did for our department and to make our jobs easier."
