New Canaan Police Choose New Chief, Deputy Chief

The new chief will replace Leon Krolikowski, who is set to retire at the end of the month after over 30 years with the department.

NEW CANAAN, CT — The New Canaan Police Commission voted unanimously Monday to promote Deputy Chief John DiFederico as chief of police for New Canaan.

His appointment comes a week after Police Chief Leon Krolikowski announced he will retire at the end of the month to accept a position with Darien Public Schools.

Additionally, Police Capt. Andrew Walsh has been promoted to deputy chief, according to a news release provided by police.

Both promotions will be effective Jan. 1, during which a three-month probationary period will be in place.

DiFederico joined the department as a patrolman in 1992. In addition to deputy chief, he has held several positions in the department, including captain of staff services, training sergeant, firearms instructor, investigator and accident reconstructionist.

Walsh joined the department as a patrolman in 2000 and has held the rank of captain, lieutenant and sergeant. He was a member of the DEA Task Force, the Special Response Team Leader and was assigned to the investigative section.

Police noted the commission was excited for the future of the department and had full confidence in the two men's abilities to lead the department.

"The New Canaan Police Commission would like to thank Chief Leon Krolikowski for his dedicated and faithful service to the New Canaan Police Department," police said in a statement. "He served the department and town with integrity and strong leadership. We wish him the very best in his job in Darien."
