New Canaan Police Swear in New Officer,Thomas Callinan

Officer Callinan begins training at the CT Municipal Police Academy next week.

The competition is tough if you're seeking a spot on the New Canaan Police Force. Thomas Callinan was sworn in on Thursday at Lapham Community Center after being selected from a group of 186 candidates who, according to a NCPD release, took the written examination as well as a physical agility test last August.

Callinan is 25 years old and resides in Carmel, NY, where he attended Carmel High School. After graduating from Carmel High School, Thomas majored in business economics with a concentration in financial management at SUNY Cortland. Callinan obtained a BS in 2009. Prior to being hired by the New Canaan Police Department, Callinan was employed by Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union as a financial services representative.

Officer Callinan will begin his training at the Connecticut Municipal Police Academy next week. He is expected to graduate from the academy in December, at which time he will have to complete a twelve-week field training program before being allowed to patrol on his own.

The selective hiring process, according to the NCPD, included a peer interview panel, a polygraph examination, a police commission interview, a psychological evaluation, a medical examination and a thorough background investigation.
