New Canaan Reaches Deal To Add More Commuter Parking: Moynihan

NEW CANAAN, CT — The town is adding 20 daily fee commuter parking spaces near the New Canaan train station under a new agreement between the town, the owners of the Walgreens shopping complex and parking app Boxcar, First Selectman Kevin Moynihan announced Friday.

The surface parking spaces at 36 Pine St., like others at St. Aloysius R.C. Church on Cherry Street, can be reserved through the Boxcar app, and additional spaces may be added at the Pine Street site based upon demand. Over the summer, the Planning & Zoning Commission approved a proposal to add ramps to access underground parking underneath the Walgreens, but when those spaces may become available is not known.

In September 2018, New Canaan became the first municipality in Connecticut to contract with Boxcar to make the more than 60 spaces at St. Aloysius available, which also are near the train station.

The new Boxcar spaces on Pine Street will be available on Oct. 24. To reserve a space, a user must download the Boxcar app (which is available from the Apple App Store or Google Play) and
create an account, They then can choose which space they want on which days and pay for it.
Spaces can be reserved up to 14 days in advance (28 days in advance for New Canaan residents).
Same-day reservations also can be made, subject to availability.

Boxcar is a New Jersey-based commuting company founded in 2016 that manages leased parking spaces in 35 towns as well running commuter buses from New Jersey into Manhattan through its app. Boxcar now manages parking spaces in New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts and California, as well as Darien, Greenwich and Stamford, Connecticut, in addition to New Canaan.
