New Canaan Residents Warned Of Stolen Check Scam
The local police department says mailed checks are being swiped by thieves.

NEW CANAAN, CT — Thieves are stealing checks from blue U.S. Postal box and residential mailboxes, and New Canaan police are warning residents to be on the lookout for the scam.
On Thursday, the department posted a link on its Twitter page to an Instagram brief about it.
"Criminals are targeting US Postal Mailboxes located in public areas to steal checks and other mail from these mailboxes," wrote New Canaan police in the statement on Instagram. "The criminals are using devices to drop into the mailbox and pull out mail looking for checks and other valuable items. In addition thieves are also targeting residential mailboxes with flags up indicating mail is inside to be picked up by the mail carrier."

To avoid being scammed, the department recommends bringing mail directly to the Post Office for mailing.
