New Canaan Rowers Medal at Club Nationals

NCHS students John Norton, Claire Campbell Grab the Gold

New Canaan rowers representing the Maritime Rowing Club in Norwalk finished strong at the recent US Rowing Club Nationals in Bethel, OH.

New Canaan High School junior John Norton snagged both the gold medal in the U17 Men’s Double event and the silver medal in the U17 Men’s Quad race. Junior Claire Campbell handily earned the gold medal in the U17 Women’s 1X race. Teammate Maggie Owen joined Campbell in snagging the silver medal in the U17 Women’s Double competition. Paul Gelhaus claimed bronze in the Men’s U19 Quad event while NCHS senior Lauren Bell delivered the bronze in the U19 Quad competition.

“We are immensely proud of these kids for giving it their all and continuing to make an impressive showing on the national level,” remarked Yan Vengerovskiy, men’s varsity coach and proprietor of Maritime Rowing.

The rowers also competed in the Philadelphia Youth Regatta recently. Norton continued his winning streak by picking up the gold medal in the Men’s J16 Single race and a silver medal in the Men’s U16 Double event.

In the Mens/Womens/Mixed Octuple faceoff, Gelhaus, Bell and coxswain Claire Hall-Tipping churned down the Schuykill River to claim first place.

Riley Mushkin and Tate Aronstein finished second in the Women’s J16 Doubles race and Andreas Moor and Ryan Borsy placed third in the J16 Quad Race.

About Maritime Rowing Club: Maritime Rowing Club is home to the New Canaan High School crew team. The organization is dedicated to competitive and recreational rowing for all ages and abilities. Based on the scenic Norwalk River, rowing both sweep and sculling shells, Maritime is a team-oriented rowing club where all members work together to provide an enjoyable rowing experience for all. Since 1996, Maritime Rowing Club has offered rowing classes for all ages and skill levels from Middle School to Learn-to-Row to Masters competitive racing.
