If Mike Halley had his druthers, he probably would have picked an easier opponent to begin his tenure as the boys basketball coach.
Replacing the popular Jeff Bussey, Halley makes his New Canaan debut on Wednesday when the Rams open their season at defending Class LL state champion St. Joseph (7 p.m.)

While Halley is beginning his first season at New Canaan, Vito Montelli is starting his 50th season at St. Joseph.
Halley previously served as an assistant coach at Mount St. Michael Academy in the always competitive New York City Catholic High School League.

Halley also had been the coach of the Connecticut Flames, an under-17 AAU travel team based out of Stamford.
Bussey, who coached at New Canaan for 11 seasons, stepped down in June due to health reasons. He won 374 games during a lengthy career that included stops at Rippowam, Darien, Masuk, Westhill and Christian Heritage.
While at New Canaan, he guided the Rams to seven state tournament and five FCIAC playoff appearances, including a trip to the league semifinals in 2006.
The program has struggled in recent years, however, as the Rams have managed only a 22-39 record over the last three seasons.
Halley inherits a team that went only 5-15 last season, although the Rams did lose six games by 10 points or less.

D’Alessandro averaged 30 points per game in the Vikings' first two contests, scoring 32 against Wilton and 28 points and against Ridgefield.
