NCHS Boys Hockey Falls to Darien

Theboys hockey team suffered a 6-1 loss to archrival Darien on Monday at the Darien Ice Rink.
The Rams dropped to 0-2 and have been outscored 9-1 in their first two games. They opened with a 3-0 loss to Notre Dame of West Haven.

Darien improved to 1-1, giving Chris Helwig his first win as the Blue Wave's new coach. It also marked the first time that Darien had beaten New Canaan, a perennial state power, in a number of seasons.
Grayson Horan and Owen Koorbusch scored in the opening period to stake the Blue Wave to a 2-0 lead.

In the second period, Brendan Hathaway and Nick Bruno scored to extend Darien's advantage to 4-0. Alec Foresta rallied twice in the third period to complete the victory.
Max Rothston made 19 saves for Darien, only giving up a goal to Henry Stanton in the middle stanza.
Chris Koennecke made 16 saves for New Canaan, which could be facing a transitional year. The defending two-time FCIAC champions lost 18 players off last year's roster via either graduation or transfers to private schools.

Holly Burwick, Madzie Carroll and Olivia Hompe each scored power-play goals the New Canaan girls hockey team defeated Ridgefield 3-1 Monday at the Darien Ice Rink.
Burwick opened the scoring in the second period. After Vindyha Rao tied it for the Tigers (3-1), Caroll put the Rams back ahead for good. Hompe provided an insurance marker in the third period.
Britt Gardella made 14 saves for the Rams, who improved to 5-0. Heather Ogden turned aside 19 shots for Ridgefield.

The New Canaan boys basketball team continues its tough early slate when the Rams visit FCIAC champion Bassick on Tuesday in a 7 p.m. start.
The Rams (0-2) opened the season with a 90-35 loss to defending Class LL state champion St. Joseph, then fell to Bridgeport Central 61-32 on Friday.
Bassick (2-0) has started defense of its FCIAC title with wins over McMahon and Fairfield Warde.

The New Canaan girls (2-2) host Bassick on Tuesday (7 p.m.). The Rams climbed back to .500 with a 52-23 victory over Bridgeport Central on Friday.
Unlike the boys, the Bassick girls team struggles to be competitive in the FCIAC and is off to an 0-4 start after a 66-16 setback to Warde on Friday.
