After a pair of blowouts in which it failed to score 40 points to open the season, the New Canaan boys basketball team put up a better fight Tuesday before falling to defending FCIAC champion Bassick 73-54 in Bridgeport.

Andrew Read scored 15 points to pace the Rams (0-3), who built a 15-14 lead after the first quarter. Connor Kilbane chipped in with 14 points and Tommy Ready added 13.

However, Bassick (3-0) responded with a 20-5 surge in the second quarter to open a 34-20 lead at the intermission.

The Rams came out strong in the second quarter, outscoring the Lions 22-13 to pull with 47-42 entering the final period.

Bassick finally put away the contest with a 26-12 burst over the final eight minutes.
