Sarah Mannelly scored 16 points and Courtney Rogers added 14 Wednesday as the New Canaan girls basketball team opened its season with a 48-36 victory over Harding.
No other player had more than six points for the Rams, who started slowly and managed only a 7-5 lead after the first quarter and a 20-18 edge at the half.

The Presidents continued to play the Rams tough, tying the contest 30-30 after three quarters.
But New Canaan finally pulled away in the fourth quarter and avoided the upset by outscoring the Presidents 18-6 over the final eight minuyes.

The Rams are coming off a 17-7 season in which reached they reached the FCIAC semifinals and advanced to the second round of the Class L state tournament. They are once again expected to contend for an FCIAC playoff spot.
Mannelly became the first player in school history to surpass 1,000 career points last season and finished the year with 1,042.
Kim Palmer is beginning her third season as New Canaan's coach.
