The FCIAC playoff hopes of the girls basketball team likely ended following Friday's 43-23 loss to Stamford.

The Rams suffered their fourth consecutive loss and dropped to 8-8 overall and 6-8 in the FCIAC as they were shut down by the Black Knights' suffocating defense.

Stamford nearly shut out the Rams in the first half, allowing no points in the first quarter and just two in the second period to build a 25-2 lead at the intermission.

With just four contests remaining in the regular season, New Canaan had fallen three games out of a playoff spot.

Stamford, meanwhile, improved to 9-5 and 9-7 and climbed into a thre-way tie for sixth with Norwalk and Staples.

Kelsey Cognetta scored 11 points and Lauren Schapiro added 10 for the Black Knights, who held Sarah Mannelly, New Canana's leading scorer, to only four points. Kelly Armstrong paced the Rams with nine points.

Meanwhile, the Stamford boys basketball team routed New Canaan 82-40 on Friday.

Stamford, which improved to 7-7 overall and 6-6 in the FCIAC, is one game out of an FCIAC playoff.

New Canaan, which is still winless in the FCIAC, dropped to 1-13 and 0-12.

Shawn Padilla had 18 points and 17 rebounds for the Black Knights, who suffered no letdown after upsetting Ridgefield 50-39 in their previous game.

Barry Boderick led Stamford 22 points - 15 coming on 3-pointers -- and Bryan Boderick added 11 points for the Black Knights.

Nick Depuy scored 10 points to lead the Rams while Willie Burger and Connor Kilbane each had nine.

Stamford  built a 24-8 lead after the first quarter and extended its margin to 42-23 at the half.  The second half was more of the same as the Black Knights ourscored New Canaan 39-17 to complete their 42-point victory.
