The New Canaan girls hockey team passed its first real test of the season Wednesday.

Olivia Hompe and Kyla Persky scored 23 seconds apart late in the third period as the Rams held off Simsbury 3-1 to remain unbeaten.

The Rams, who are averaging seven goals per game this season, found themselves facing a deficit when Sarah Melanson scored in the second period to give the Indians a 1-0 lead.

But Madzie Carroll tied it for New Canaan (9-0) later in the second period and Hompe put the Rams ahead with just under three minutes remaining in the contest. Persky provided the insurance goal.

Dani Sullivan made 22 saves for Simsbury (8-3) and Britt Gardella stopped 18 shots for New Canaan.
