NCHS Basketball Takes on Ridgefield

Olivia Hompe scored five more goals Monday, leading the undefeated girls hockey team to a 7-0 victory over Hamden at the Darien Ice Rink.

Hompe tallied the first five goals of the game, helping the Rams jump out to a 5-0 lead midway through the second period. The junior forward has now scored 41 goals this season, an average of nearly four per game.

Kyla Persky and Holly Burwick also scored for New Canaan, which improved to 11-0.

Britt Gardella (10) and Sarah Klearman (3) combined to make 13 saves for the Rams.

The losss snapped a seven-game winning streak for Hamden, which dropped to 7-4.

New Canaan is back in action on Wednesday against Simsbury at the International Skating Center. Simsbury gave the Rams their toughest game of the season last Wednesday, falling, 3-1.

After scoring 15 goals in its previous two games, the offense of the New Canaan boys hockey team was shut down Monday.

But the Rams still managed a 1-1 tie against fifth-ranked Xavier in a matinee at the Darien Ice Rink, giving New Canaan just one loss in its last seven games (5-1-1).

Overall, the Rams are 5-3-1 following an 0-2 start.

Andrew Meoli scored in the first minute of the third period to give the Falcons the lead, but Jake Granato tied it for the Rams with just under five minutes remaining. The teams then skated through a scoreless overtime period.

Chris Koennecke made 21 saves for New Canaan while Shane Baldwin stopped 24 shots for Xavier (6-3-2).

The New Canaan girls basketball team looks to rebound from a tough loss to Staples when the Rams head to Ridgefield on Tuesday (7 p.m.)

New Canaan suffered a 62-56 loss to Staples on Thursday despite 27 points, six assists, six steals and five rebounds by Sarah Mannelly.

The loss snapped a two-game losing streak for the Rams, who dropped to 7-4.

The New Canaan boys host unbeaten Ridgefield at 7 p.m.

The Rams dropped to 1-7 following a 45-29 loss to Staples on Thursday while Ridgefield improved to 8-0 with a 73-47 victory over Bassick on Friday. Ridgefield now joins St. Joseph as the only two remaining unbeaten teams in the FCIAC.
