The New Canaan boys soccer team was dethroned as state champions Monday, falling to archrival Darien 1-0 in the quarterfinals of the Class L state tournament.

Darien's Brennan Branca scored on a penalty kick in the 12th minute, and the Blue Wave's defense made the one-goal lead hold up over the final 68 minutes.

One year removed from winning just two games, the fifth-seeded Blue Wave (14-3-3) has advanced to the quarterfinals to take on No. 4 seed Bunnell in Stratford on Wednesday.

Bunnell, which lost to New Canaan in last year's state final, advanced with a 3-1 win over No. 13 Naugatuck.

Three other FCIAC teams were eliminated Monday. Top seed Pomperaug defeated Greenwich 5-2 and Farmington ousted Staples 1-0 in a rematch of last year's Class LL state championship game, won by Farmington.

The New Canaan field hockey team upset Norwalk in the FCIAC playoffs. The Rams couldn't do it again on Monday

Katie Schmidt and Christine Mase scored for the third-seeded Bears, who defeated No. 11 New Canaan 2-1 in the quarterfinals of the Class L state tournament.

Norwalk, which improved to 14-3-1-0, avenged a 1-0 loss to the Rams in the quarterfinals of the FCIAC playoffs earlier this month.

The Bears will take on No. 2 Glastonbury in the semifinals on Wednesday at a time to be announced.

Schmidt opened the scoring in the first half and Mase made it 2-0 in the second.

New Canaan, which finished the season at 11-6-1-2, didn't go quietly and pulled within 2-1 on a goalie by Melanie Sztorc with just under 10 minutes remaining.

Shannon O'Malley made two saves for Norwalk and Britt Gardella stopped four shots for New Canaan.

Noah Radecki, a West School second-grader, finished fourth on Sunday in the Connecticut State Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships in the Sub-Bantam age group.

Radecki ran an 8:34 over the hilly 2,000-meter course at the White Memorial Conservation Center in Litchfield in one of the fastest state Junior Olympic races to date.

Radecki’s time now ranks him in the top 30 in the country and his placing qualifies him to advance to the New York/New England Junior Olympic Regionals on Sunday in Lake George, N.Y.

The top 20 finishers in the age group Sunday will advance to the national championships in December in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
