Saurday's 36-29 defeat to Stamford -- New Canaan's first loss to the Black Knights since 1971 - did not eliminate the Rams from the FCIACchampionship game, but they now need help.
The biggest benefactor from Stamford's upset was Greenwich, which climbed to second in the FCIAC football rankings (ahead of New Canaan) and can clinch a spot in the championship game with a win at Danbury (4-3) on Thursday.
Since Greenwich (7-0 FCIAC) ) plays early, it would have luxury of sitting back and waiting for its opponent in the Nov. 18 FCIAC championship game at Trumbull's McDougall Stadium.

It probably would be be Staples, which can clinch a berth with a win on Saturday at winless Westhill, although the Wreckers will be without top runner Joey Zelkowitz (separated shoulder).
Even if the Wreckers (7-0 FCIAC) should somehow lose to the Vikings, they still might have enough bonus points to qualify for the FCIAC championship game.

New Canaan now becomes big Danbury fans. If the Hatters (4-3) can upset the Cardinals, the Rams (7-1) can secure a berth in the FCIAC title game with a win over Trumbull (2-4) on Saturday.
The health of quarterback Matt Milano could be a concern after he suffered an apparent concussion against Stamford.
However, Rams coach Lou Marinelli told the Stamford Advocate that Milano had a migrane headache and should be okay.
New Canaan's lost kept five teams at least mathematically alive for the FCIAC title game. Here are the rankings after the weekend:
1. Staples (7-0) 131.3
2. Greenwich (7-0) 122.5
3. New Canaan (7-1) 115.6
4. Norwalk (6-1) 112.5
5. Darien (7-1) 110.0
Norwalk needs losses by Greenwich and New Canaan while Darien (which hosts winless Bassick) needs losses by Greenwich, New Canaan and Norwalk.
