U-9 New Canaan Crusaders excel in tourney
The U-9 New Canaan Crusaders ran the table this past weekend at the annual Soccer Club of Ridgefield tournament, winning all four of their games.
In the opener Saturday morning, they defeated the Ridgefield Tigers. Noah Radecki got the Crusaders on the board early and Evan Beiles and Charles Brossy followed with first-half scores.
Goalie Steven Panzano kept the Tigers off the board, helped out on defense by sweeper Blake Whittaker. Casey Whittaker did the same in goal in the second half with Radecki netting two more goals to help the Crusaders pull away.
The Crusaders followed their morning triumph with an inspired effort against the Brookfield Rowdies on Saturday afternoon. Despite some acrobatics from Panzano in goal, the Rowdies amassed an early two-goal lead before an unassisted effort from Radecki put the Crusaders back in the game.
After another Rowdies’ score, Evan Beiles scored on a steal and a quick strike to put the Crusaders down only one at the half. Charles Brossy then entered as goalie in the second half and stoned the Rowdies, assisted on the defensive end by Peter Vigano and Colin Mennitt.
The Crusaders began to apply relentless pressure on the Rowdies' goal and a shot by Beiles knotted the score. With time running out, the push resulted in a beautifully placed corner kick from Beiles that Radecki punched into the net for the lead. The Crusaders kept at it in the final minute and Christopher See's goal on a rebound off the post from Beiles' shot sealed it for the Crusaders.
Defense ruled Sunday morning as the Crusaders downed the Ridgefield Bobcats. The relentless Crusaders' defense, led by James Kontulis, Blake Whittaker, and Strider Bennett, kept the shutout intact for the Crusaders, who faced only two shots all day.
Brossy got the Crusaders on the board on another well-timed cross from Beiles, and Beiles added another goal before the half to add to the Crusaders' lead. Radecki netted two goals in the second half to put away the game.

The Jags pushed back hard and goalie Panzano made several key saves. Another assist by Beiles resulted in a goal by Brossy, who returned the favor, assisting on Radecki’s third.
Not stopping there, the Crusaders netted a few more to pull away with unassisted goals by Radecki, his fourth of the game, and Beiles.
