This year's St. Joseph football team is a mere shell of the squad that won a second consecutive CIAC Class S state championship last season.
The Cadets graduatedly virtually all their weapons from a potent offense, including record-setting quarterback Joe Della Vecchia.
Still, New Canaan will be seeking a measure of revenge when St. Joseph visits Dunning Stadium on Saturday (2 p.m.) Last season, the Cadets handed the Rams their only regular-season loss with a thrilling 28-27 win in Trumbull.
The Rams scored in the final seconds and had a chance to kick the extra point and force overtime. Instead, coach Lou Marinelli elected to go for the win and the Rams failed to convert the two-point conversion.
A year later, New Canaan has reached the midpoint of the season at 5-0 following last week's 28-14 victory over Norwalk in a battle of unbeatens.
Matt Milano threw three touchdown passes for the Rams, who lead the FCIAC standings with Darien (5-0), Greenwich (4-0), Staples (4-0) also unbeaten.
Through five games, Milano has passed for 1,242 yards and 14 TDs with only three interceptions.
Connor Kilbane continues to be Milano's favorite target with 36 receptions for 394 yards and six TDs while Patrick Newton has 25 catches for 285 yards and two scores. The Rams' third-leading receiver is Peter Kraus (15-163, 3TDs).
St. Joseph (1-4) has been struggling offensively in a rebuilding season, although the Cadets broke out last week, defeating Harding 40-12 for their first win. Freshman Mufasa Abdul-Bazir rushed for 160 yards and three touchdowns for St. Joseph.
THURSDAY'S RESULTS

New Canaan 3, St. Joseph 2 -- Lauren Holec, Eileen Dinnie and Kelly Armstrong scored for the Rams (9-2-2), who rallied from a 2-1 halftime deficit to hand the Cadets (12-1-1) their first loss of the season
