The New Canaan boys placed ninth and the girls 11th Monday in the FCIAC cross country championships at Waveny Park. Here are the top-five finishers for the Rams:
For the boys, No. 23 Alexei Spinu (17:16), No. 42 Dylan Kavookjian (17:57), No. 52 Tucker Radecki (18:15), No. 68 Kalan Lysenko (18:38) and No. 69 Isiah Masionette (18:42).
For the girls, No. 46 Lana Delvecchio (16:56), No. 63 Elizabeth Perry (17:39), No. 64 Lily Baer (17:40), No. 65 Lily Citrin (17:43) and No. 68 Emily Wood (17:50)
Darien's bid to unseat Danbury as FCIAC boys cross country champions fell just short Monday at New Canaan's Waveny Park.
The Hatters held off the Blue Wave by only four points to capture their seventh consecutive league crown. Darien defeated Danbury in a dual meet on Sept. 20 en route to a 17-0 regular-season finish.
Danbury's duo of senior Tom Moore (16:17) and junior Nick Carlsen(16:18) finished third and fourth. Overall, Danbury, which has claimed 10 of the last 11 FCIAC crowns, finished with 54 points.
Completing the top five was McMahon senior Chris Madaffari (16:20). Darien's top runners were Charlie Baird (16:31) and Mike Johnson (16:46), who were sixth and seventh.
In the girls race, Ridgefield won the team championship, even though the Tigers placed no one in the top five.
Sarah Guillaume and Caroline Carr were seventh and eighth for the Tigers, who won with a score of 56 points.
Greenwich, which featured individual champion Abigail Markowitz, finished second with 80 points. Last year's champion Wilton was third with 97 points.
Markowitz covered the 2.4-mile girls course in 14:55, defeating Westhill's Nicole Ambrosecchio by five seconds.
Completing the top five in the girls race were Wilton's Alosha Southern (15:07), Darien's Grace Loh (15:08) and Westhill's Claire Howlett (15:10).
Defending champion Heather Moriarty of Fairfield Ludlowe was 19th (15:55).
It's basically status quo in the New Haven Register high school football state poll as the top nine spots remained unchanged for the second straight week.
New Canaan (6-0) remained fifth after its 43-14 win over St. Joseph while Staples (5-0) held on to the No. 7 spot after its 38-12 victory over Trumbull.
In the win over St. Joseph, Matt Milano completed 21-of-25 passes for 340 yards and six scores to become the school's all-time leader in career touchdowns, passing Kurt Horton.
Xavier (6-0) tops the poll for the third straight week, followed by Masuk (6-0), Ansonia (6-0), Hand (6-0), New Canaan, New London (5-0), Staples, Windsor (6-0) and Bunnell (6-0).
The only change came at No. 10, where Darien (6-0) replaced North Haven. Coming off a 35-34 double overtime win against Wilton, the Blue Wave plays at Staples on Saturday morning (10:30) in a battle of unbeatens.
New Canaan Third Grade Red Blanks Westport
Chris Canet and Tommy Towers scored touchdowns as the New Canaan Red third grade football team extended its scoreless streak to 10 quarters Sunday with a 12-0 victory over Westport at Romano Field.
Line play was particularly solid in this win, led Nicholas Radman, Jackson Lamorte, Jackson Slazyk, Ben Marshall, Bryce Harrell, Corey Pickering and Dylan Kortman. Griffin Deane and Will Thomas, who tag-teamed at center, continued to get better as the game wore on.
On defense, playmaker Harry Appelt make numerous plays while Nicholas Radman and Maddox Underwood had a key stop on fourth down. Henry Cannon and Jack Murphy also made a number of tackles.
On New Canaan's first drive, Canet ripped off a 34-yard run before scoring on a 30-yard scamper to make it 6-0. Hayden Shin also ran well for New Canaan.
The second half was more of the same as New Canaan's defense was led by Charlie Borthwick, Maddux Underwood and Harry Appelt, Jackson LaMorte, Jack Connors, Jack Murphy and Johnny Dunn.
After a Westport punt, the line play of Bryce Harrell, Ben Marshall, Mac Machale, Will Thomas, and Jackson Slazyk continued to open holes for Canet and Shin.
With 10:26 left in the fourth quarter, Dunn made a TD-saving tackle in what might have been the biggest player of the game. Maddox Underwood and Nicholas Radman made the next big stop, before Canet recorded an 11-yard sack of 4th-and-10.
Towers then put away the game for New Canaan with a 70-yard touchdown run.
