What can the New Canaan football team do for an encore? - keep winning.
The Rams look to improve to 7-0 on Friday when they visit Wilton, which is coming off a heartbreaking 35-34 double overtime loss to Darien.
Last week's New Canaan's offense was in hight gear as Matt Milano threw six touchdown passes in the Rams' 43-14 victory over St. Joseph. Milano become the school's all-time leader in career TDs in last than two years a starter.
He completed 21-of-25 for 340 yards, throwing his first five TDs to Patrick Newtown, who had eight receptions for 196 yards.
Lou Marinelli won his 250th career game as New Canaan coach, a position he has held since 1982.
The Rams need to continue winning as they are in a battle with Darien (6-0), Staples (5-0) and Greenwich (5-0) for a berth in the FCIAC championship game. Staples hosts Darien this week, so the loser likely will drop out of contention.
Wilton (3-3) has lost three in a row since a 3-0 start to fall back to the pack in the FCIAC.
Backup quarterback Brett Phillips played admirably for the Warriors last week, filling in for starter Sean Carroll, who was sidelined with a concussion. Phillips threw three TD passes to Rob Keers, including a late score that forced the overtime.
The New Canaan girls soccer team concluded its regular season Thursday with a 1-0 victory over Greenwich.
Sarah Mannelly scored for the second-seeded Rams (12-2-2), who will host No. 7 seed Fairfield Warde (9-5-2) in the quarterfinals on Saturday.
Trumbull (7-3-6) grabbed the No. 8 spot by battling Westhill to a 1-1 tie and will play at top seed St. Joseph (14-1-1) in an all-Trumbull quarterfinal.
Staples stayed alive earlier in the day with a 4-0 win over Stamford, forcing Trumbull to get at least one point, which the Eagles accomplished by scoring in the second half to erase a 1-0 deficit against the Vikings.
The other two remaining playoff spots available Thursday went to Darien, which blanked Wilton 2-0 and Fairfield Warde, which defeated Trinity Catholic, 3-0.
In Saturday's other quartefinals, No. 3 Westhill (11-1-4) hosts No. 6 Wilton (8-3-5) and No. Greenwich (10-2-4) entertains No. 5 Darien (9-4-3.)
Wilton and Fairfield Warde finished even in points, but the Warriors earned the higher seed based on their regular-season win over the Mustangs.
