New Canaan Seventh Grade Football Cops Another Championship

The team garners its fifth consecutive championship with a 20-0 win over Fairfield Red.

The New Canaan Seventh Grade Black team won its share of the FCFL championship by thumping an over-matched Fairfield Red squad Saturday night at Dunning Stadium 20-0.

The game was essentially over after the first quarter as Black sat on its early 20-0 lead and showed mercy to Fairfield, knowing that its brethren team (Red) had a similar result earlier in the day (26-14 over Darien).

In keeping with tradition the two were crowned co-champs by evening's end. This is a familiar story for the boys, who have played on the team since third grade when there was only one team. The Black have won a share of the FCFL title for five straight years for a combined nine championships.

This semi-final ended with Black recording seven interceptions, two each by Shannon Smith, Drew Monroe, Andrew Jahns and one by John Fox.

The game started with Black holding Fairfield on its first possession as John Fox lead the defensive charge and on offense, it took just three plays before quarterback Emerson Logie hit Drew Monroe on a 30 yard, "pump and go" play to make it 6-0.

Steady Peter Swindell split the uprights for the point after and Black had a 7-0 lead with 7:45 left in the first quarter.

The defense subdued Fairfield with Lucas Niang, Tony Pirrone, Kieran Schaney, Luke Salvati, Peter Lavieri, Thomas Williams, Jahns and Fox all making stops. When Smith recorded his first interception and returned it 32 yards for a TD, it was a 13-0 Black lead.

Not long after, Fox grabbed an errant Fairfield pass and Black took over again. On the first play of the second quarter Logie snuck it in from one yard out and with the Swindell PAT, it was 20-0 with over 10 minutes left in the half.

With the scoring complete it was a grind it out offense coupled with tough "D" to keep the shutout. A fine job from all including  Austin Dupont, Charlie Wood, Ryan Radecki, Jarrett Torromeo, Matt Hall, David Noonan, Jack Havard, Jake O'Neill, Ryan Rigione, and Robbie Smith. Clayton Burt missed the game due to a concussion.

NC Black finished its season with a perfect 9-0 record. The two teams had a combined 19-0 this season.
